Ninnyashinski, whose official name is Nyamari Ongegu, is one of the brightest luminaries in the Kenyan music scene. Most recently, Ninnyashinski made headlines after cancelling his highly anticipated trip to the United States. While disappointing for fans and organisers alike, this turn of events underscores the complexities of the artist’s life and the need for self-care amidst the demands of fame and performance. His musical odyssey arguably began at Nairobi School, a national institution embedded with a rich tradition that, over the years, has continued to awe learning peers with its award-winning live band. Coincidentally, in 1999, the trio formed Kleptomaniax, at the time Kenya’s premier hip-hop group.

In 2004, the group released another single, “Tuendelee,” which became its biggest hit. The song was written as a response to the “Diss track” by various hip-hop musicians, including Bamboo, who criticised the commercial Kapuka music style performed by Kleptomaniax.
Their debut album, M4E (an abbreviation for Maniax Forever), was released in 2005.
Later that year, the group received an MTV Europe Music Awards nomination for Best African Act, a category awarded for the first time but won by Nigerian recording artist 2Face Idibia.
In 2006, Nyashinski relocated to Delaware, USA, with his family, where he found work as a truck driver. According to him, life there was difficult.
After 2007, the group took a break while its members engaged in solo projects. In 2007, he released his first solo album, “Kama Kawaida,” which catapulted him to fame in Kenya and across Africa. The album was nominated for various awards, including Best Male Artist at the 2008 Kisima Music Awards. He also won Best Rap Act at the 2008 Channel O Music Video Awards.
In 2012, Nyashinski collaborated with Sauti Sol on the single “Unconditionally Bae” which became an instant hit in Ke to international fame.
In 2016, Nyashinski made a successful comeback, and his song Maliaka won an Mdundo Award for Most Downloaded Male Single in 2017.
