In a world where adversity can be a relentless foe, Mary Njambi Koikai, lovingly known as Jahmby or Fyah Mummah, stood as a beacon of unwavering courage and indomitable spirit. Her journey began with a battle that would define her life—endometriosis, a condition she confronted at the tender age of 13. For Mary, this was not just a medical diagnosis; it was a call to arms, a challenge she faced head-on with unmatched determination.

The toll of this silent yet debilitating illness was profound. Mary underwent an astonishing 21 surgeries throughout her life in a relentless pursuit of relief and healing. Each surgery marked a chapter in her fight, a testament to her endurance and refusal to surrender to pain. In 2018, Mary embarked on a transformative journey to Atlanta, Georgia, where she underwent a pivotal surgery that offered hope and a renewed sense of possibility.

Not only was Mary a warrior in her health battles, but she was also a scholar and a visionary. Her pursuit of higher education was a testament to her tenacity, earning degrees in mass communication from Daystar University and international relations and French from USIU. Her academic achievements reflected her commitment to knowledge and excellence, making her a beacon of inspiration for all.

Born on January 24, 1986, Mary Njambi Koikai was the cherished first child of Stella Wambui Kanogo and Daniel Koikai. She was named in honour of her grandmother, Mary Njambi. Her upbringing instilled in her the values of resilience, compassion, and a relentless pursuit of dreams.

Mary’s influence extended far beyond her personal battles and academic pursuits. She became a voice—a powerful advocate for endometriosis awareness, tirelessly campaigning to shed light on a condition that affects millions globally yet often remains misunderstood and underreported. Her advocacy work was not just a campaign but a beacon of hope, inspiring countless individuals to confront their challenges with courage and hope.

Mary Njambi Koikai was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. She grew up in the lively Dagoretti neighbourhood, surrounded by a tight-knit community that greatly influenced her formative years. 

Professional Career

Mary Njambi Koikai is best known for her dynamic career in the media industry. She worked as a radio host and reggae presenter on the popular Kenyan radio station Metro FM. Her engaging personality and deep passion for reggae music earned her a loyal following. Jahmby also ventured into television, where she co-hosted “The Trend,” a popular entertainment show on NTV Kenya. Her charisma and ability to connect with audiences made her a beloved figure in Kenyan media.

Jahmby’s biggest influencer in life was her grandmother. She often spoke about her grandmother’s unwavering support and strength, which inspired her to persevere through numerous challenges. Despite her public persona, Jahmby kept her personal life relatively private. She did not have a child, and there is no public information regarding her having a partner or children. Her focus was mainly on her career and advocacy work, particularly raising awareness about endometriosis, a condition she has battled for many years.

Family and Siblings

Njambi was part of a loving family. She left behind one sibling and her mother, who supported her through her health journey. The strength and unity of her family were a cornerstone of her resilience.

Regrettably, Mary Njambi Koikai passed away on June 3, 2024, leaving a legacy that transcends her time with us. Her journey was not defined by the battles she fought but by the victories she achieved and the hearts she touched. Mary’s life was a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of advocacy, and the enduring strength of community and compassion, a source of inspiration for all.

In her honour, Mary Njambi Koikai will be remembered for her courage in the face of adversity and her unwavering spirit that inspires and uplifts us all.

In the bustling streets of Nairobi, where the vibrant pulse of urban life merges with dreams both big and small, Damaris Muriithi, affectionately known as Dama, has carved her name into the chronicles of Kenya’s entrepreneurial history. 

As the dynamic force behind Dama Mobile Spares, she has revolutionized the mobile spare parts industry, becoming a symbol of resilience and determination for aspiring entrepreneurs across the nation.

Damaris’s journey began in the lush, green landscapes of Kirinyaga, where she spent her early years helping her aunt on the farm. However, destiny had grander plans for her. In 2011, she embarked on a new chapter in Nairobi, drawn by the allure of opportunity. Little did she know, this move would set the stage for her extraordinary rise in the business world.

Upon arriving in Nairobi, Damaris’s first foray into the working world was selling mobile phone scratch cards, earning a modest Ksh 1,500(US$11.67) Yet, it was during this time that she discovered her passion for the mobile industry—a passion that would shape her future endeavors.

A pivotal moment came when her cousin offered her a job at a mobile phone accessory shop on Luthuli Avenue, Nairobi. Although the business eventually folded, Damaris’s resolve remained unbroken. She quickly found employment along Munyu Road,Nairobi immersing herself in the intricacies of the trade. Here, she learned the nuances of buying, selling, and sourcing supplies from overseas, skills that would prove invaluable.

Fueled by her newfound passion and equipped with essential experience, Damaris made a bold decision in 2016: she ventured into entrepreneurship. Leaving behind her job, she set out to build her own business empire in an industry dominated by established players.

The road to success was fraught with challenges. Her initial imports from Dubai fell short of the growing market demand, forcing her to turn to local suppliers. However, her unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction laid the foundation for her future triumphs. Despite narrow profit margins, she prioritized retaining her clientele, setting the stage for her business’s eventual success.

Guided by perseverance, Damaris’s business flourished. She opened multiple branches across Nairobi County, and today, Dama Mobile Spares stands as a testament to her entrepreneurial acumen, employing over 100 individuals and earning widespread acclaim.

Amidst accolades and recognition, Damaris remains grounded, attributing her success to divine providence and an unwavering commitment to her customers. As she navigates the ever-changing tides of business, she emphasizes the importance of adaptability and customer-centricity—principles that continue to steer her toward greatness.

In a poignant moment of triumph, Damaris was honoured at the StarBrands Awards East Africa, receiving the title of CEO of the Year. Her company, Dama Mobile Spares, was also recognized as Kenya’s most preferred mobile spares supplier, a testament to her relentless pursuit of excellence.

“Money doesn’t discriminate based on background—color-blind, race-blind, sex-blind, degree-blind—it cares only for those bold enough to chase it,” shares Eugene Mbugua, quoting his recent read, “How to Get Rich” by Felix Dennis.

 Leaning back in a gazebo at his Karen home, Mbugua reflects on Dennis’s journey from poverty to publishing magnate, finding parallels in his own rise from adversity.

 Raised without a stable home, Mbugua’s education was a grace that led him to his first job as an extra on “Inspekta Mwala” after secondary school at Upper Hill school, Nairobi.

 “Starting as an extra was humbling,” he recalls of his Ksh 500 ( US$  3.88 )paycheck, soon upgrading to boom-swinger roles on shows like “Makutano Junction” and “Machachari”. Despite financial struggles, Mbugua’s determination earned him a scholarship to USIU, where he studied television production and launched into freelance writing for the “Saturday Nation.” 

His entrepreneurial spirit ignited alongside his studies; partnering with Dexter, he pioneered film workshops in local schools, capitalizing on his TV insights.

 “We signed up 30 students at Makini School,” Mbugua reminisces, using the earnings to fund a movie shop and later a game court near campus, raking in Ksh 6,000 ( US$ 46.51) daily. 

A stroll past a ‘To Let’ sign spurred his first TV venture, ‘Young Rich,’ produced on borrowed equipment and pitched to every station until K24 embraced it in 2013.

 “It changed my life,” Mbugua recalls of earning Ksh200,000 ( US$ 1,550.39)  per episode, swiftly scaling to a million monthly.

 Beyond ‘Young Rich,’ Mbugua’s production portfolio expanded with hits like “Foods of Kenya” and “Sol Family,” underscoring his knack for TV business over film due to its advertising revenue model.

 International deals soon followed, selling content to South Africa and India with eyes on France.

 However, Mbugua admits not every venture prospered, like his hospitality stint that cost Ksh 10 million ( U8S$ 77,417.36)

 “Failure taught me humility,” he reflects, citing lessons learned on swift, economical failures. 

The pandemic further tested Mbugua’s mettle, halting shows and slashing staff, prompting innovative responses like “Concert Nyumbani.”

 “Hope isn’t strategy in crisis,” he asserts, reflecting on his battle with COVID-19 and newfound home gym setup post-recovery. 

Nature-loving and adventurous,as this 32-year-old  looks to the future, he remains driven by Dennis’s entrepreneurial wisdom, navigating the unpredictable media landscape with resilience and vision.
