Andrew Kimani Ichung’wah: From Humble Beginnings to Political Powerhouse

Andrew Kimani Ichung’wah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kikuyu, Kenya, has become prominent in Kenyan politics. He is often seen as a close ally and staunch supporter of President William Ruto. However, his unwavering loyalty to Ruto has drawn criticism from some in his Mt. Kenya electorate, who feel that their local needs are being overlooked. Early Life and Education

Born in 1978 in Gikambura Village, Karai Ward, Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County, Ichung’wah is the second youngest in a family of 12. His father, a businessman, ran a butchery, which exposed Ichung’wah to the world of business from an early age. His educational journey began at Kikuyu Model Nursery School, followed by Kikuyu Township Primary and Alliance High School. He later pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and History at the University of Nairobi (UoN) from 1996 to 2000.

During the two-year gap between high school and university, Ichung’wah took Certified Public Accountant (CPA) courses, starting at Kenya College of Accountants (KCA) and completing them at Strathmore College. He also holds a diploma in banking, further enhancing his financial expertise.

Early Career and Business Ventures

Ichung’wah’s career began in the business sector. He worked in his brother’s small shop in Nyamakima, Nairobi, selling various items. Eventually, his brother and two Ugandan partners started selling shoes, giving Ichung’wah valuable business experience.

In 2001, Ichung’wah joined Diverseylever East Africa Limited, a subsidiary of Unilever, as a cash and bank accountant. After leaving this role in 2003, he started a butchery business in Kikuyu, which he managed while working at Madison Insurance from 2003 to 2006. He later became a financial controller at the Standard Group from 2006 to 2008.

Entry into Politics

Ichung’wah’s political aspirations were evident when he first ran for the Kikuyu MP seat in 2007, though he was unsuccessful. He tried again in 2013 under the National Alliance (TNA) party ticket and won. His first term in the National Assembly saw him serve as the Vice-Chairman of the Public Investments Committee, a member of the Committee of Powers and Privileges, and a member of the Departmental Committee on Agriculture, Livestock, and Co-operatives. Notably, he sponsored The Alcoholic Drinks Control (Amendment) Bill of 2014.

In 2017, Ichung’wah was re-elected on a Jubilee Party (JP) ticket. During this term, he was a member of the Budget and Appropriations Committee. However, his support for then-Deputy President William Ruto led to his removal from the committee during the Jubilee Party purge in July 2020, as President Uhuru Kenyatta sought to eliminate perceived rebels.

Rise as Ruto’s Ally

His loyalty to Ruto solidified his standing within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, under which he was re-elected for a third term in 2022. He is currently the leader of the majority in the National Assembly, leading government business in Parliament. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua described him as the second highest-ranking politician from the Mount Kenya region after himself on March 29, 2023.

Family Influence in Government

Ichung’wah’s family is deeply entrenched within President Ruto’s government. His sister-in-law is the Kenyan envoy to South Africa, and his brother-in-law serves as the Principal Secretary for Roads. These positions highlight the extensive influence and reach of Ichung’wah’s family within the current administration.
